Max Lane Mini Euro Tour With Syndicate

Together with the Syndicate crew Max Lane embarked on a mini European tour to France & UK. The first stop was Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival where they played on the opening day at the Centre Régional d'Art Contemporain in the beautiful town of Sète at the south of France. Playing alongside Awesome Tapes from Africa, Leftoo, Christian Prommer & Alexander Barck, they got the five-day music mayhem going to a crowd from all over Europe.

From the sunny mediterranean coastal town, the entourage then headed down to gloomy London where they did a live Ustream show together with Kidkanevil & Daisuke Tanabe for Maisonette Electronique hosted by Laurent Fintoni. Click here for the archived show. And do watch out for the glitch-craft by Daisuke San.

The Syndicate team also organized the first ever Singapore x London Bass Exchange for a night called SuperHelix with two rooms featuring DJs, producers & visual artists from the two cities. Om Unit, Blue Daisy, Digital, Morphy & Need for Mirrors joined the Singapore contigent for a bassy night out.

Rounding up the trip, Max Lane & Cherry Chan hit the Jus Like Music online radio show on NTS. Both of them played a short set live on air and had a quick chat with the Jus Like Music man himself, Gavin Handley. And what didn't go on air was a surprise visit by Kutmah to the studio.

Avoiding the void

As we grapple with daily tasks and adulthood, most of our minds are preoccupied with mirages of great landscapes to escape to. So the question lingers on, when do we get a damn break?

Here's the ritualistic offering to appease the Bedouin's nomadic soul...

Episode 0/3 - Featuring Max Lane and Izaak Stern

Rolling on with our monthly podcast, we have 2 beat nuts on the case for May.

The bright young star of the Qilin camp is our guest mixer man for this episode. Izaak Stern presents us with a mix full of phased out samples and crushed beat collages, impressive and immersive.

"Izaak Stern is on a journey across musical tangents, where nothing is prescribed and nothing is certain. With an experimental modus operandi (which often results unconsciously in an “experimental” end product), the producer views beatmaking as an exploratory process. From the bedrooms of Singapore, to the speakers of London, Izaak Stern is a faceless sound emerging from the depths of the underground"

SYNDICATE(D) NEWS: The Beat Buffet

Yesh, Max Lane will be back on the Syndicate long table of gears & controllers come this Saturday. Somewhere next to him will be the non-Jewish/non-accountant button-pushing partner in crime, Izaak Stern. Here's a wikked wikked mix from him. Stretch the table longer you will find Cherry Chan with tricks from London post-RBMA stint. And as we learned a couple of weeks ago, occupying the smallest of space on the same table will be Ikuma. Last and definitely not least serving beats in the line is the man with the phat kicks & snares from Australia, Dizz1.

Before the beat buffet table opens this Saturday at Home Club, below are some bites for a beat tasting session.

OTHER UPDATES!!!

We can't wait to drop our maiden monthly mixtape podcast later this week. As mentioned before we're going to have 2snide from the Harmitage and Frijsfo Beats fam. He will be rocking it out with resident, Rora Realis.

The tongue-twister of a name Rora Realis will also be making an appearance as his other self - who is apparently without a doubt a true pioneer in Singapore's burgeoning dubstep scene - at Good Times. So if you want to get down with it:

Back to some home news; the crew has been working pretty hard with their eyes glued to their laptops the past weeks trying to perfect that particular kick thuds and snare crunches. Yes, our very first compilation, UPP001, will be out pretty soon. And there are some really really tasty beats waiting to be unleashed.

Rora Realis & Max Lane New Year Jam

2010 New Year Jam by upp/circular

Let's usher in 2010 with some indulgence.
May you have a blast this year.

The Mim Project

Instead of letting them rot in the digital abyss of my hard disk drive, I have decided to compile 3 tracks completed earlier this year and repackaged them in a mini EP as The Mim Project. At least now they will have a chance to decay on the shelves of e-commerce and during that process try to etch out some cents which I hope to accumulate into dollars for myself.

So with all that effort and thought put in please support and purchase The Mim Project, especially if you really dig the tracks. In other words and a more fashionable manner, cop it!

You can name your price with a minimum of US$1 for all 3 tracks. Anything below that will mean most of the cents will go to PayPal. And let's not get into a lengthy discussion on economics.

Just click on the Download button on the player for purchase or you can cop it here.

About The Mim Project

Still undecided whether the plosives of Pembukaan, Purnama & Preamble are by coincidence or design, what I am definitely certain of these 3 tracks is that they are all built on samples from old Malay sounds. Hence Mim, the character you see on the artwork which is the Arabic/Jawi equivalent of the letter M. Stop the applause and the other half of you, wipe that smirk off your face. And after skipping the economics debate I would want to give semiotics a miss too.

So back on track and to the tracks, The Mim Project is a pastiche made up of patches from Orkes El-Suraya(a 70's nasyid group from Medan, Indonesia), sounds of keroncong, a stolen interview of the late Javanese literary great, Pramoedya Ananta Toer; all interwoven with the sensibilities of what Max Lane is or to become. Here's to my long-lost cultural heroes.

On MeshRadio

Got invited by the island's legendary DJ, Ramesh K, to host Swing on his online radio platform, MeshRadio. The hour-long program will be streamed on Sunday, 14 June 09. Other than dropping my current favourite tunes in some serious selecktah bizness, for the first time ever, you will hear me speak over the mic. No toasting or line-spitting of any kind. It's just me talking.

So tune in 14 June at:
http://meshradio.sg/
(the show will be archived on the site after streaming date)

ps: Watch out for Christen Danse's hour of Swing to be aired soon too.

MUDD UP EXXXCLLUUSSSIVVVE!!!!!

Thanks to DJ/Rupture, Purnama, a track i've completed recently, raided New York airwaves last night as he dished it out on his Mudd Up! radio show on WFMU. Apparently I was the first one to send a tune via his SoundCloud DropBox. Well I guess it pays to be the first. "Optimism pervades!"

Merry K'mas

Here's a Christmas mix I did for the place & entity I spend most my days at; what people would usually call making a living. Leaning more towards the fun-gimme-the-sunshine kind - well it's the festive season after all - with less beats & bass and more guitar janglings & sing-alongs. So have a Merry Christmas!

Rumble Boom Bleak

So much for the promise of being productive. Well, I did procrastinate to put this up. Now it is here and distancing itself away from the post-snobbery fun of its predecessors, lets say this is going to be something slightly serious. It's generally looser, smaller, slower, darker. Great for bus rides. But watch out for the scatterings at the end.

The virginal upp/circular refix, or if you want to indulge me; cook'upp.
And as you can see, we have been more productive.
Let's hope it stays that way. Till then!

DISJUNCTURE OF POP

It's the Labour Day holiday, workers are taking a break, inflation is diluting my coffee and it's time to make pop matters again. If you're a music snob, here's a mix that is Not Safe For Work (NSFW). To avoid weird looks, fiery frowns and stabbing stares, please put on your ear/head phones. If it doesn't matter, well, shut up and dance.
